Here’s another video clip, this one by Tim Keller, gives  his perspective on what it means to be missional. Check it out and share your thoughts. okay— I want to stress this again, especially if you are part of Christ Community, go back and check out the vids on the last two post. All three relate to this issue and they are pretty short.

  1. Keller is The Man. What else is there to say? Generous, informed, and right!

  2. There is a fairly recent article by Hybels stating some error in his past seeker sensitive ways. In summary, he states that his church should be placing much more emphasis on discipling believers so that they are equipped to do the work of the ministry.

  3. I listened to all the clips again and understand what missional and seeker sensitive are, but when i really thought about what the Bible said I thought about these verses. Don’t we need the program people and the artists to make the whole body of Christ?
    1 Cor 12:12-27
The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. 13For we were all baptized by[a] one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

14Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 16And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

21The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

27Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

  4. Okay I saw all three. I like the idea of sending people out rather than in. I also like applying business philosophy to religion. I like thinking in terms of gaining market share and applying principals to obtain a goal. I have to think of that all day and while I am working…if it reminds me to think of ways to help the church, how great.

I also like the the idea of being a missional church, but I love programs. Programs keep me committed and some topics really peak my interest. I like many aspects of all. I just read an article about the SHOWTIME network. the executive, don’t remember his name, was speaking about their marketing strategy of partnering with Amazon and having scripts of shows put on Amazon’s ereader tool (electronic book) called kindle.

I thought wow, how cool. That’s new and the exec wrote, “We try and use a new platform that no one else has used yet every time we introduce a new show.” how cool is that? i mean here’s to trying something new, but at the same time you can also stick to what has traditionally worked…and still is working. he also went on to say that it was a part of their added value (freebies given to companies from a larger buy for something else). so it wasn’t their main purchase and it was free, but they were smart enough and brave enough to try it. We should think of ways to communicate with the outside world whether it be something new or ways we’ve done before, but still apply some ground rules, or good teaching that makes you communicate well. I need that. :) Lots of Love to the church!

  5. Thanks Marissa, I like your perspective! Sometimes I just wish I had four times the time to work on all these good ideas! Peace and Love. Larry

  6. Me, too! I often have to sit and look at great ideas without ever having the chance to put them into action. Sometimes I partially put them into action and that hasn’t worked out so well. :)
