The Discipleship Project At Christ Community
This picture is The Miraculous Draught of Fishes, by Jacopo Bassano, 1545. it’s taken from the following Scripture. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break – Luke 5:4 -6. I love the story because so often we think we know what to do, what works and what won’t help us even if we try it, but if we will listen to Jesus and do what he says, we will find his word is the key to our blessing. I know it isn’t always so simple or immediate as a net full of fishes but I believe it is no less certain. In one sense that is the foundation of true discipleship and the basis for our focus in The Discipleship Project for the summer of 2010. Here’s a brief introduction
The Discipleship Project is a learning project we enter into together for two months (June 9 -July 28, 2010) in order to deepen and sustain both our discipleship and our disciple-making throughout the year and throughout our lives.
It involves the following:
1. Weekly assignments requiring the practice of spiritual formation disciplines. These include: Bible memory, Biblical mediation, Prayer, Mission, Fellowship.
2. Wednesday night discipleship community group for learning and sharing what we are experiencing. We will meet in the worship area at Christ Community Daytona from 6:30 – 8:00. The first week (June 9) come for dinner at 6:00 if you can!
3. Online community for daily encouragement and interaction. Just check in here daily, at themusicandthedance.com.
4. Practical Training, in developing a “next step spiritual growth plan”, initiating discipling relationships with others, praying and watching, and biblical memory.
Your Commitment: Do the assignments as faithfully as you can devoting yourself to the process. Be willing to pray that God will give you an opportunity to pass on what you have learned in the coming year. If for some reason you can not attend the Wednesday night part of the project commit to doing what you can by participating in the core of the project by following us online.

Hey Pastor Larry,
I had seen many of the Discipleship Project posts, but didn’t understand what exactly you guys were doing. I just now browsed through all of them and found the explanation! I copied all the posts to print out, and will try to go through these daily in the upcoming weeks… so I’ll be going through it just as you guys finish it. Thanks for posting them online so us far-away folks can follow along too (even though I’m late)!
Hi Sheena,
In a couple weeks we’ll actually have all of these up on the website for people to download and go through and then hopefully take another person through. One of our goals in making disciples is to make disciples who make other disciples. Hopefully this will be contagious to you.
Sheena D! It’s great to hear from you. I see Casey has already replied. I guess I was too slow. I’m glad you found the explanation I hope you find it all helpful and I hope you guys are doing well! Peace, Larry
Thanks for the reply, I was easily able to copy and paste them all into word and print out a copy for Michael and I. We’ve gone through week 1 day 1 together so far. Great intro, love the real-life application of the fisher of men passage, and the reminder of how even when you’re spent, and at ‘the end of your rope’, you’ve still got to take one step further and listen and do what God is telling you.
